General Requirements:
The Department of Art www.shsu.edu/art has about 700 undergraduate majors in Graphic Design, Studio Art, Photography, and Animation and offers an MFA in Art and Social Practice. Huntsville is a small community located about 70 miles north of Houston. Faculty are encouraged to develop programs that engage students with the local community.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
The Art Department of Sam Houston State University invites applicants for full-time Assistant Professor of Practice to teach Methods in Art Education and other studio art classes beginning Fall 2025.
The Assistant Professor of Practice in Art Education reports to the Chair of the Department of Art and oversees the Teaching Certification tracks in Studio Art, Graphic Design, Photography, and Animation. The Assistant Professor of Practice typically teaches 9 semester credit hours each semester including Methods in Art Education and other studio courses in their area of expertise. They will work closely with the College of Education to ensure curriculum meets requirements and standards for state Teaching Certification. Participation in statewide teacher organizations and recruitment events is expected. Faculty are required to attend scheduled faculty meetings, serve on departmental and university committees, hold regular office hours, advise students and perform other job-related duties as required.

Experience Required for the Position (Faculty Positions Only):
K-12 public school teaching experience is required. University teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred. Demonstrated potential for peer reviewed research activities is also preferred.
