The Department of Teaching + Learning in Art + Design in the Division of Liberal Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, to commence fall 2025.
RISD recognizes principles of social equity, inclusion, and diversity as fundamental to its academic mission as an art and design school. We understand these principles to require ongoing attention to difference and expansion of the forms of knowledge from which our curricula originate. RISD is engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and learning environments. We encourage applicants whose teaching and professional work (creative practice and/or academic scholarship) centers on bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities. We are eager to welcome applicants who can help advance the institution’s social equity, inclusion, and diversity goals and those from groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and long standing, including Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other People of Color, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, veterans, people with disabilities, and first-generation college students.
RISD recognizes diversity and inclusion as fundamental to its learning community and integral to an art and design education. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, scholarship, professional practice, and service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
TLAD seeks a colleague to enhance and advance the Department’s record of innovation, who is committed to playing an active role in supporting forward-thinking art and design education particularly in public schools and community arts education initiatives throughout Rhode Island. The ideal candidate will have teaching, administrative, and leadership experience that will strengthen our existing record of animating and rethinking PK-12, collegiate, and community art and design education nationally and internationally. We seek candidates whose scholarly/creative practice and/or teaching centers on works and bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities.
Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is an undergraduate and graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,500 graduate and undergraduate students. RISD has a critical review process, which is very similar to the tenure process. RISD supports faculty professional practice with sabbaticals, pre-critical review leave, conference funds, and professional development grants. For more information about RISD, please visit www.risd.edu.
TLAD has a history of engagement with schools and community since the foundation of the College, with classes for public school children and teachers established by 1883. The first undergraduate (1938) and graduate (1958) degrees offered by the School were in art education. The Department is housed in the Division of Liberal Arts and is one of two exclusively graduate departments at RISD. We support students enrolled in two 1-year intensive graduate degree programs: a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with licensure and a Master of Arts in Art + Design Education (MA). Both Masters degrees in TLAD are in residence, full-time programs. In 2017, the Department launched a Certificate in Collegiate Teaching in Art + Design, providing students in all RISD’s graduate programs with curricular and pedagogical foundations for faculty positions in higher education.
TLAD provides graduate students with diverse learning opportunities across its degree offerings, service-learning, collegiate teaching courses, and externally funded outreach initiatives. The Department recognizes the transformative nature of art and design education, particularly in the lives of children and youth, and we embrace our role in guiding graduate students as future agents of change.
Additionally, TLAD has a longstanding commitment to the professional development of PK-12 art teachers and offering high quality art experiences for youth. We run three free community arts programs for young people in the greater Providence area. The Mini Makerz Art Studio works with young children (ages 4-7) and families; Middle Makerz (a new program) serves middle school students in grades 6-8; and Project Open Door (celebrating its 20th anniversary this year) serves high school students. In the coming year, TLAD faculty will be creating a deeper collaborative relationship with RISD’s Continuing Education program to create a sustainable funding model for our free community arts education programming.
